Nature red in tooth and claw. In an area where water is scarce and the bush gives scant cover, what would you do if you had to drink, but knew near the water stalked fearsome predators? That’s the dilemma that faces Nxai Pan’s springboks. Their solution: go en masse, drink swiftly and keep an eye on those approaching lions. A deadly game of cat-and-big-mouse thus plays out amidst the stark beauty of Nxai Pan’s fossil lakebed and salt flats. Other mammals are often sighted around these parts – including spectacular herds of giraffe and the elusive cheetah – but it may well be the springboks’ and lions’ daily fight for survival that captivates you most.
