Overnight stay in Mauritanian Bedouin-type tents in the Lompoul Desert

Overnight stay in Mauritanian Bedouin-type tents in the Lompoul Desert

Such is its diversity and variety, Senegal is one of those countries that seems larger the more you explore – and the Lompoul Desert is one of the great examples of its capacity to surprise. A pocket of the Sahara transplanted to the Atlantic Coast, the golden dunes of the Lompoul arrive as a wonderful shock to visitors, a rolling sea of sand suddenly rearing up, a Mauritanian landscape-in-miniature. Lompoul offers the real desert experience, the pleasures at once exotic and blissfully simple: a late walk among reddening dunes, shadows lengthening; morning camel rides into the sands; the companionable hospitality of the Bedouin people; and losing count of the silver stars that prick the velvet night sky.
