The Phoenician city of Sidon

Sidonis the place to go for the full Arab experience: dive into the souqs, and don’t emerge into daylight again until all your holiday shopping’s in the bag. The vaulted ceilings and dizzying alleyways ensure it will be a while, but that’s okay, as some of the country’s finest carpets and leather goods, brassware and brocades are fashioned and sold. The souks also have lively little coffeehouses, alive with the smells of coffee, nargile charcoals and the popular orange-blossom water. Recharge with drinks and pastries, take your time, and by the end of the day you’ll not only have an armful of goodies, some friendly waves of recognition from souk-sellers, but also a renewed appreciation of the souk, the region’s cultural heart and economic engine.
