Potala Palace of Lhasa - home of the 14th Dalai Lama and most of his prior incarnations

Few cities are as fabled as the secret, high mountain city of Lhasa, nor so true to myth the iconic, all-surveying splendour of the central Potala Palace. The original home of the 14th Dalai Lama and most of his prior incarnations, Potala Palace is now more museum and library than hive of Tibetan feudal power and Buddhist scholarship, but its high walls, thousand rooms, statues and ancient scriptures are still seeped in the Lamas’ presence and you’ll be aware of its historical, cultural and religious significance as you walk its halls. Its centrality to Tibet, Tibetans and Tibetan Buddhism is undeniable, nor that the building is worthy of the legendary image in your dreams, which makes Lhasa, like its translation, truly a ‘place of gods.’
