Few cemeteries can claim to be near the top of a city’s must-visit list. Recoleta is one.
The final resting place of many a president and poet, modern pilgrims may make a beeline for Eva Peron’s tomb, but the real joy comes from a couple hours of aimless wandering through this spectacular symphony of stone and marble. It’s truly a city of remembrance, an enormous grid laid out like downtown blocks, with tree-lined ’avenues’ and narrow alleyways, all surrounded by seemingly ever more ostentatious mausoleums in every architectural style imaginable. Lose yourself in this tranquil, unique spot and gain an insight into both the city’s rich history, and the history of its rich.
