On 11.11am, December 21, 2012 the world will end. Perhaps it is worthwhile then, to visit the Regional Anthropology Museum of Yucutan in Merida to understand why. You’ll be astounded by the achievements of Mayan civilisation, from their agriculture, architecture and art, through their science and mathematics and, of course, their elaborately devised calendar, so a visit while on tour here is well worth putting on your to-do-before-the-big-day list. The end date for the great cycles of time on the Mayan calendar, after the full 25,695 year procession of the equinoxes, is upon us, but what this means is anyone’s guess -apocalypse or the silent ticking over of the odometer? Whatever the truth, it is likely to be found in Merida, a great base to delve into an ancient civilisation’s mysteries and ponder the brilliant future.
