San Pedro de Atacama's moonscapes, salt lakes and cacti

One of your few companions in the moonscapes and salt lakes around San Pedro de Atacama is the giant cacti – earth’s hardiest survivors in one of the world’s harshest environments. These monuments to endurance can live several hundred years and grow up to a towering 15 metres. Look out for cacti in towns and villages too: the distinctive cardon furniture often populates San Pedro’s adobe buildings, and the roof of the town’s postcard-perfect church is also made from cactus wood.
