Saone's Crusader castle

One of the best preserved of the crusader castles, Saone has for nearly a millennium looked down onto surrounding heavily forested slopes, a beautiful sight, sitting aloof from nearby villages thanks to its vertiginous cliffs, the castle’s point of entry being marked by an astonishing 28-metre high freestanding stone needle. Standing in the baleful shadow of this gigantic finger, then venturing up to the castle’s imposing walls, it’s easy to see why TE Lawrence declared Saone to be, simply, “sensational”.
