Even forgetting its religious Biblical importance, the Sea of Galilee would be a must-see for anyone visiting the country. It is a beautiful area, the gentle waters of the lake fringed with relaxing spots to while away some time – just the place to linger between points of pilgrimage, for this is an area extraordinarily rich in biblical associations. A day lakeside can, in the space of a few kilometres, take in where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount, and performed the miracle of the five loaves and two fish. There’s also Capernaum, where Jesus and various apostles called home for much of his Galilean ministry, and where Peter’s house and an ancient synagogue are situated. A visit here is unfailingly beautiful, and spectacularly rewarding.
