A magnet for beach bums, those seeking a sharp adrenaline fix and fishing folk, Swakopmund is Namibia’s top seaside destination, a former German colonial town of atmospheric palm-lined streets in a beautiful location on the Atlantic coast. The joy of Swakopmund is whatever you choose to do, chances are there are only a handful of other places in the world where you can do it. At sunrise, hot air balloon your way along the spectacular, wild Atlantic coast and into the Namib Desert. Follow up your beachside lunch by strapping on a sandboard and surfing down the towering dunes that surround the town, or jump on a quad bike and hit the sand sea. And afterwards, if you’ve still got the energy, hit the waters and go fishing for sharks (catch and release). There are more sedate activities – the town’s market is worth a tour, and time spent soaking up the town’s unique atmosphere is never time wasted – but Swakopmund really delivers when you embrace the adventures it so happily serves up.
