Standing in dappled light beneath the forest canopy of Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation centre’s reserve, you’ll be charmed by the original wild man of Borneo, the magnificent and endangered orang-utan. Orphaned baby orang-utans, or those once stolen for the pet trade, are taught how to survive in the wild while being nursed through their youth. Without a parent the animals cannot learn the survival skills required, except, ironically, through further human intervention. Watching wide-eyed baby and toddler orang-utans in the centre’s ‘kindergarten’, and the adults feeding on the boardwalk in the open reserve, be enchanted by the intelligence and warmth of our closest genetic match and sobered by the knowledge that they’re now faced with extinction due to habitat loss.
