The 'Smoking Water' of Blue Nile Falls

The 'Smoking Water' of Blue Nile Falls

The Blue Nile Falls were described by the explorer James Bruce as ‘a most magnificent sight, that ages, added to the greatest length of human life, would not deface or eradicate from my memory.’ The new dams upstream have somewhat impacted on their magnificence, but the sight is still a memorable one; the cavalcade of water and mist known in Amharic as Tis Issat, or ‘smoking water’ can still thunder through in flood with an unforgettable, awesome power.
