Sparse, surreal Sparreneset

Surreal, sculpted flotillas of ice grace the milky calm of the fjords around Sparreneset, in foreground comparison to the forbidding peaks and frigid tundra of the inland terrain. On Svalbard’s second largest island, Nordaustlandet, to the northeast of Spitsbergen, you’ll be overcome by this true polar desert. As sparse as the landscape is, its grand folds and reflections are perfect for walking and beachcombing or perhaps a hike for more breathtaking views.Svalbard is a place that will confound your expectations, but in the best of directions – ‘vast cathedral’ doesn’t begin to describe this place where the soul soars with the landscape’s vaulting majesty.
