The spire and ice of Uummannaq

The steep, solid spire of Uunnannaq Mountain rises like a sentinel to dominate the head of the breathtaking Uummannaq fjord and the skyline of the namesake Inuit community beside it. The small island is surrounded by ice, and within view of the mighty continental glacier that caps Greenland. Calved icebergs scatter through water before the oceanfront homes, creating a natural vista that several gigabytes of stunning digital photography can never quite capture, though you’ll no doubt try. Viewing this, and the great local museum, is soul-soaring stuff, and a firm highlight for Greenland adventurers. Uummannaq is Greenlandic for heart-shaped, as the mountain spire is and as your memories will be of this magical place and people.
