Taormina's world-famous Greco-Roman theatre

Perched on the slopes of Monte Tauro and looking out to the Ionian Coast, Taormina is Sicily’s loveliest town. This sophisticated little diamond has been wooing visitors for centuries, and on arrival, it’s instantaneously apparent why: a main drag that’s a traffic-free joy to wander, a beach that’s reached by cable car, and – best of all –Taormina’s exquisite Greek theatre. Sicily’s second largest ancient theatre, it is preserved beautifully – it still hosts performances – however the views are even more spectacular than the theatre. There, past the ochre and gold ruins, lies the fuming snowcapped hulk of Etna, Sicily’s rocky and golden coastline, and the beautiful blue Ionian Sea.
