Tashichho Dzong - Fortress of the Glorious Religion

Tashichho Dzong - Fortress of the Glorious Religion

Chief rival to Taktsang Monastery for the title of Bhutan’s country’s finest building, Tashichho Dzong should be the first entry on the must-see list of every visitor to Thimphu. Very much the main pulse of Bhutan the huge complex is the seat of the national government, the national library, home to the king’s throne room and, with some 2,000 monks during summer, the nation’s largest monastery. Only open to visitors during Thimphu Festival and when the monk body moves to their winter home in Punakha. Even if you’re not here at the right time of year, it’s worth a look at the exterior – massive, whitewashed and red-roofed, set by a river with Thimphu’s hills as backdrop, Tashichho Dzong is an arresting sight.
