Mingle with the different trading tribes at the impressive market in Dimeka and you’ll receive a quick, enlivening dose of African cultural diversity and tradition. The distinct Benna, Karo, Dus, Korcho, Hamer and Geleb people trade here, and with some fun, fevered bargaining, you can get a decent deal on their tribal handicrafts and goods, and perhaps make a few friends; the lucky sometimes get invited back to homes where you’ll experience how tribes people have lived for thousands of years. And remember, when you shake hands in thanks in Ethiopia, either in the market or someone’s home, hold your right elbow with your left hand. It is a great form of respect. If you aren’t shown this courtesy anywhere outside of Addis Ababa, perhaps reassess your own manners...
