Train travel - a quintessentially Indian experience

From crowded, passengers-on-the-roof colour of suburban trains to air-conditioned long-distance comfort, riding the rails is a quintessentially Indian experience. An efficient, go-anywhere network, the 60,000-odd kilometres of track is the country’s central nervous system, and travelling by train helps you gain a true understanding of the country, its importance to city and countryside alike. More than that, however, it can be enormous fun, sociable and lively, with carriages at times jam-packed with schoolchildren, farmers off to market, chattering brightly-saried ladies. And, as you clatter along past paddy fields and plains in the blossoming dawn light, a hot sweet Indian tea in hand, there’s nowhere finer to be, or way of travelling.
