Tunisia is instantly recognisable in many films – the Saharan sands of the English Patient, the streets and souks of Kairouan in Indiana Jones – but nowhere is this more the case than at Matmata, where Star Wars nuts line up in front of the troglodyte dwellings which Luke Skywalker called home. Film buff or not (and parts of Life of Brian were also shot around here), a tour of Matmata should be on every visitor’s to-do list. Visiting the underground homes is an unusual experience, a fascinating insight into resourceful Berber locals’ ability to tame even this harsh, bare landscape.
