UNESCO World Heritage-listed ancient city of Axum

Heard of the Queen of Sheba? She was as rich and powerful as idiom suggests. And she lived in Axum. Think the Ark of the Covenant lost? It lives in Axum too. Heard of the Axumite Empire? Well, perhaps not, but you should have; its wealth and influence was far reaching in the ancient world. Axum is a place where myth and reality collide in a curious mix of architecture, empire and story. Here, massive stone stelae obelisks top an array of mostly unexplored tombs in an archaeological dig too big for Ethiopia to as yet contemplate. Looking up at the stelae, or stepping down into the few open crypts, you’ll perhaps wonder at the unrevealed secrets of millennia past, and wonder whether the stories of the Ark are true…Apparently held in a sealed chapel in the grounds of Axum’s St Mary of Zion Church, the guards won’t let you take a peek lest you burst into flames.
