Every month brings another fair or fiesta to Cusco. Small wonder – centre of the Incan world, and a jewel in the Imperial Spanish crown, this has long been a place of pilgrimage and celebration, and its claim to be crossroads of the continent is well-founded. If you’re lucky enough to visit in June, you might catch the Festival of the Sun (Inti Raymi), a week-long celebration of street fairs, dancing and music, all culminating in a spectacular procession to Sacsayhuaman, the splendid Incan remains that overlook the city. Peru at its most colourful, and that’s saying something.
