UNESCO World Heritage-listed Roman amphitheatre of El Jem

UNESCO World Heritage-listed Roman amphitheatre of El Jem

Perhaps the most spectacular Roman remains in Africa, the enormous El Jem amphitheatre towering over the surrounding town and its olive groves is one of Tunisia’s most sensational sights. With a capacity of around 35,000, only Rome’s and Capua’s coliseums were larger. A walk in the pit, past the cells and arched passages where animals and gladiators were held is a time-travelling thrill, the immense galleries and walls looming over you. Any visit here should also take in the neighbouring museum, which houses an excellent collection of intricate, remarkable Roman mosaics.
