Valnerina valley of the Nera river

Umbria, a land of fertile plains and rolling hills...until you reach the Valnerina, a wonderful patch of wild in the region’s south, packed with mountains, wooded valleys, and barren uplands. Home to some of Umbria’s best walking, this is a hidden, almost forgotten, pocket of Italy, where you’re more likely to see wolves on mountain ridges and eagles overhead than busloads of tourists. Peaceful paths lead through beech forests, past remote, timeless hamlets and over windswept mountain passes, where the great spine of Italy, the Apennines, stretch out in front of you. Any walk here is a rich tour through some of Italy’s finest – and finest preserved – natural landscapes.
