Visegrád Castle on the Danube

Central Europe at its most dreamily panoramic: the silky, cerulean Danube curves southwards, then north again, skirting rounded hills on either side. And here lies the town of Visegrad and its picture-book castle overlooking the Bend. The town’s Renaissance Palace gives a glimpse of 15th century splendour – this was after all in its day Europe’s finest palace. But be sure to seek out the fine walking trails that lead up through oak and beech woods to the citadel, not just to take a look around this atmospheric building, but for the once-in-a-lifetime views that unfold from the ramparts.
