Visit a clay lick

To see hundreds of macaws and parrots at a clay lick is an unforgettable sight, and one of nature’s great spectacles. A riot of colour and noise, the birds flock to the clay for its salts and minerals, helping to neutralise toxins they’ve ingested as part of their diet. The Heath River Wildlife Center is 10 minutes by boat from one such clay lick, and a cacophonous morning visit offers an unbeatable Amazon experience.
