The world's largest wooden structure of Todai-ji

The world's largest wooden structure of Todai-ji

Behind the immense bronze Buddha Daibutsu housed within the world’s largest wooden structure of Todai-ji, you’ll find school children and slight woman trying to crawl through a hole in one of the building’s support pillars. It’s said to be the same diameter as the Buddha’s nostrils and that if you squeeze through, you’ll be blessed with enlightenment in the next life. However, it seems Nirvana is not for most westerners …It’s a tight squeeze and though you might shimmy through, if you don’t want to risk a gaggle of  red-scarfed and long-socked school children howling at your stuck self, resist this quick way to soul’s peace and watch instead. Not every hopeful makes it.
