  • Why we love India

    • With a population of well over a billion, and the seventh largest in size of all countries, it’s no wonder India is a country of many personalities.
    • Supercharged, technicolour Delhi offers as wild and vivid a ride as any city-explorer one could wish for, while the nearby sensual delights of the Taj Mahal and Udaipur offer a soothing counterpoint
    • No trip to India is complete without a cup of Chai from a roadside stall – this is the smell and taste of India
    • In Karauli we stay in the palace Maharaja Ganesh Pal Deo Bhadur built in 1938 for himself and his guests, where his family still lives today
    • In Sri Lanka, palm-fringed beaches skirt an emerald isle of high tea plantations, uncommon hospitality and ancient Buddhist pilgrim trails
    • Time spent on Kerala’s waters makes for idyllic exploration while another watery attraction, Varanasi, offers a unique spectacle of devotion that both excites and humbles

    Safety information

Your safety is our top priority. It’s one of the main things we consider when designing and operating our trips. Here’s some of the ways we help to keep you safe, and a few of the things you can do to make your trip memorable for all the right reasons. Before you travel We monitor travel alerts provided by the Australian, UK, USA and Canadian governments on a daily basis. Before a tour goes on sale we assess any risks and decide how to reduce and manage these. If we determine that an entire trip, part of a trip or an activity is too risky we won’t do it. It’s as simple as that. If we can’t address the issues and improve conditions we might modify an itinerary, change the accommodation or even decide not to travel to a certain location. Our overseas staff and local leaders are trained to address any health and safety concerns during trips. Before you travel, we’ll give you an emergency phone number. You’ll also get comprehensive pre-departure information, with information about vaccinations and other relevant health issues. We’ll also tell you if there’s any special clothing or equipment you need to bring. During your trip: You local leader is trained in first aid and always carries a first aid kit. Being a local means that if something does go wrong they know fastest and most effective way to get help. We’ll also give you a 24-hour emergency number in addition to the emergency destination telephone number. What you can do: Read through all the information we send you. If you’ve got any questions we’re always available to help. Keep an eye out for travel alerts by consulting your local Foreign Office. We also monitor these daily so that we can modify tours if necessary. Get some medical travel advice about the countries you are visiting, particularly about vaccinations and the type of personal first aid kit you should carry. Make sure you tell us any medical conditions, special needs or dietary requirements you might have. Get your vaccinations and take relevant medication well before travelling so they have time to take effect.

Very diverse and interesting travels covering both east and west coasts, plus interior of south India. 'Total Holidays' and the bus transport companies were of a very professional standard, with excellent drivers. The hotels were of a varying standard but I realise that this was often due to lack of choice; however all were clean and well serviced.

We had a great time in Sri Lanka on the whole the accom was very good, Dilip our guide was fun and knowledgeable but there was too much packed into the trip, too much time was spent having lunch , there was too little relaxation time and days 12/13 where spent in Berjaya hotel listening to the constant din of renovation instead of the haven to unwind at Hibiscus as we'd expected.

The places we visited were all interesting. What added greatly to that interest was the information of our tour guide and the local/historical knowledge of the the specialised local guides. The trip was confronting but important in developing a greater cultural/historical awareness. Again and again there was the WOW factor as we explored ancient places and became familiar with their history and story. A great and, in some ways, a sobering experience. It left me with a deep sense of my own privileged existence in a country like Australia.

Nothing was too much effort and everything went off as planned, without any hitches (I think this is maybe a miracle in India). His exceptional knowledge, humorous charm and ability to have everyone at ease and in comfort saw our small group through a wonderful, unbeatable, joyful and heart rendering 3 weeks in Rajasthan. The tour captures the big ticket items as well as providing a glimpse at rural India while staying at historical palaces and forts in villages yet to be ruined by tourism. Some of the locations and accommodation would be very challenging to find or coordinate on your own so the benefit of an organised tour was immediately obvious. The very reliable, relaxed and informative tour guide made the tour that much easier by taking care of all the background work so we could simply get on and enjoy the considerable charm of Rajasthan. Highly recommended!

Another excellent trip with Peregrine! There is no way we could have experienced so much in such a small time frame had we done it ourselves. A great mix of cities and small villages (that we would never have had the chance to see otherwise). Also, with a country like India that has such a different culture, it was helpful to have the guidance of a local tour leader - not just for sightseeing and restaurant suggestions, but especially for cultural sensitivities and advice. Our leader was very knowledgeable and took us through all the various sites and their history without the need for local guides. The supporting bus drivers were also friendly and fantastic. We had a couple of trainees for a couple of days at the start and finish, but they were also extremely helpful and charming. I feel we got the best out of the small part of India that we travelled, thanks to Peregrine.

I generally like to travel independently but am pleased that I chose this tour to see India. It was quite stress free having Peregrine and our tour guide organising the tricky details during the tour as it seems booking a train ticket and finding and choosing suitable hotels and restaurants is not straight forward here in India. The content of this tour was great. I think we got a good mix of busy city and intense experiences interspersed with lovely relaxed days in small villages where we got to relax a bit and enjoy the company of the local people. Varanassi a huge highlight, the Taj Mahal was magnificent, we were lucky enough to see a tiger in the wild and the list of amazing experiences goes on.

I went to India only because it was close to Nepal and I was very apprehensive! I was concerned about the whole situation being confronting and unsure about travelling in an organised group. On meeting Jimmy I felt immediately relaxed and comfortable, the group dynamics were excellent. After the initial 'overwhelming' sense of 'what can I do' I was able to relax and just enjoy the whole experience. The overnight train trips were a shock to the system but an AMAZING experience and highly recommended! The variety in the accommodation was wonderful. The Florence service and cleanliness was outstanding. Jimmy was amazing with a wealth of knowledge not only about the country/history but also with advice on what was 'safe' to eat and do. He is an amazing young man with a great sense of humour. This is my first trip with Peregrine and I would definitely use the company again. I loved Sri Lanka and was so pleased that I chose the country as my first destination. Sri Lankans are friendly, hospitable people and the country has a lot to offer in its diversity; both culturally and geographically. I hope my next trip will be equally as good. I never really felt as though I were part of a "tour group" as such. We had a young local tour leader and driver both of whom clearly loved their jobs. As my experience of hell would be sunbathing on a beach for two weeks, I felt sorry for the beach/resort dwelling tourists as they never really got to experience Sri Lanka. Touring can be exhausting but it is also very rewarding. Highly recommended.

Our guide made our India travel extremely easy with us all knowing with so many hiccups along the way that we could not have achieved what he did. He was calm and we all know he did a lot behind the scenes having to change accommodation and rebook flights etc. fantastic experience and would not hesitate to refer your company on to friends. the only down side was Peregrines under-estimate of travel times in India.... but this was not a problem as our guide was very up to date with all that.

A holiday to India was NOT on my bucket list, but my daughter wanted to go, so I went with her for company. Now I must admit I did enjoy it. The Taj is unbelievable, amazing, beautiful. The many Palaces we visited were also amazing.I also enjoyed meeting the local village people.

Shailendra Singh was an amazing tour guide (we joined trip on 29.6.12 in Dehli not 24.6.12) and answered my heaps of questions well and without hesitation. He went out of his way to help e.g. getting my shoes fixed, ensuring I was alright as I was suffering in the heat, etc. We were well looked after, including getting the bus fixed whilst we were at an attraction and then replacing it the next day for a more comfortable and spacious bus. Thanks Shailendra & Peregrine!

My husband was very nervous about me going to India and insisted it was an organised group tour. I couldn't have chosen a better tour operator. I was able to ring him and tell him there was no need to worry. I knew I was in great hands from the outset. Accommodation, food and leaders were fantastic. Will be using Peregrine again for sure! I felt like I was stepping out into the great unknown when I arrived in Delhi. I travelled alone and it was just wonderful to be met by a very friendly representative of Peragrine called Raj who immediately put me at ease. The entire trip exceeded by expectations. I knew it was organised but I don't think I'd fully appreciated how much work the company and the tour leader put into ensuring that everyone has an enjoyable and comfortable trip. I would travel with Peregrine again in a heartbeat. So much fun.

This tour suited us perfectly. It was the right length and was a good mix of urban and rural experiences. It provided great insight on the history of India and also allowed us to interact with the friendly, colorful people of Rajasthan. And for a good part of the tour, there were only five of us so it was a very close personal group that allowed some flexibility in our activities.

Really glad that the tours are kept to small numbers. Never let your tours exceed a mini bus. We saw too many huge coaches filled with tourists that didnt look like they could possibly cohese as a group, or were having fun. Perhaps the "tip kitty" should be included in the initial cost, rather than an addon cost.

The tour had plenty of variety - heavy city bussel to small village life. The tour guide Shailendra Singh was excellent, informative and 'rattle free' when things went astray. He has an excellent network of friends (cousins!!) in all areas of touring and shows confidence and pride in his country. Only one little nag - a little bit tiring seeing all the temples and forts. Whilst they were magnificent, after many were seen they became a little boring. I think that Shailendra made the tour group a cohesive, happy gropup, catering for our needs at any time of the day without a hassel.

The Rajasthan tour was very well organised and ran extremely smoothly. While bus trips were long and slow at times, every place we stayed in was interesting, a good value hotel, fort or palace. We enjoyed both the major cities and forts, as well as the more intimate visits to small unspoilt villages. I would recommend the trip highly to anyone who wanted to see and understand the nature of Rajasthan.

The trip exceeded my expectations, accommodation outstanding, tour leader was fantastic. Something new to see around every corner. Was a little hot but our welcome everywhere more than made up for this, can't wait to return.
