  • Why we love Middle East & North Africa

    • Cities don't come any more atmospheric or exotic than those you explore here: the busy, beautiful bazaars of Iran; Morocco's medinas, each an endless warren of inviting alleys and lanes; Jerusalem's unique blend of religious history and iconic sights; Egypt's variety, from bustling Cairo to languorous Aswan
    • Both more glorious in reality than any postcard or photo can hope to convey, the twin stars of Jordan and Egypt really do need to be seen to be believed
    • Morocco has a wonderful power to ‘transport’. In the narrow, shaded alleys of the souks of Fez, where the stalls are arranged by craft, a wall of mirrors turns into a bank of shiny brass. Overlaid with the pungent aroma of the nearby tannery, it could be any year, any century.
    • No matter how high your expectations, Al Khazneh (The Treasury) in Petra will exceed them. And while you can travel from the front gate by donkey or carriage, we think an essential part of the experience is the walk in

    Safety information

Your safety is our top priority. It’s one of the main things we consider when designing and operating our trips. Here’s some of the ways we help to keep you safe, and a few of the things you can do to make your trip memorable for all the right reasons. Before you travel We monitor travel alerts provided by the Australian, UK, USA and Canadian governments on a daily basis. Before a tour goes on sale we assess any risks and decide how to reduce and manage these. If we determine that an entire trip, part of a trip or an activity is too risky we won’t do it. It’s as simple as that. If we can’t address the issues and improve conditions we might modify an itinerary, change the accommodation or even decide not to travel to a certain location. Our overseas staff and local leaders are trained to address any health and safety concerns during trips. Before you travel, we’ll give you an emergency phone number. You’ll also get comprehensive pre-departure information, with information about vaccinations and other relevant health issues. We’ll also tell you if there’s any special clothing or equipment you need to bring. During your trip: You local leader is trained in first aid and always carries a first aid kit. Being a local means that if something does go wrong they know fastest and most effective way to get help. We’ll also give you a 24-hour emergency number in addition to the emergency destination telephone number. What you can do: Read through all the information we send you. If you’ve got any questions we’re always available to help. Keep an eye out for travel alerts by consulting your local Foreign Office. We also monitor these daily so that we can modify tours if necessary. Get some medical travel advice about the countries you are visiting, particularly about vaccinations and the type of personal first aid kit you should carry. Make sure you tell us any medical conditions, special needs or dietary requirements you might have. Get your vaccinations and take relevant medication well before travelling so they have time to take effect.

Morocco tends to evoke images of sultry souks filled with hand-woven rugs, honey-drenched sweets and gold trinkets, with the pungent aroma of spices and shisha smoke heavy on the air, and the discordant but enchanting call to prayer echoing off ochre sandstone.

We had the most wonderful time in Egypt. The monuments are so magnificent, I can't believe we were lucky enough to see them. The food was fantastic (unexpected) and the Egyptian people were gracious. You feel so much for them as tourism has reduced so much because everyone is concerned about safety - and so many Egyptian people have lost their livelihood because of this. We felt completely safe and looked after the entire time and would highly recommend the tour to everyone. A life's highlight! Our guide Eman was brilliant and we all learned so much.

We cannot praise Hoda too highly. She created a really good group atmosphere & spirit and taught us a lot about Egyptian society in general and the changing role of educated women in particular. Her knowledge and presentation of Egyptian History both ancient & modern was really impressive and enjoyable.

We thought the tour was really well structured and got a very good overall experience of Morocco. A couple of us in the tour that were females and more shopping oriented thought it would be a good idea to offer buying excursions as an option on some of the free days, particularly in Marrakech and Fez. We also thought it would be a good idea to offer (for those like myself who bought up) the option of a postal box to send back. By the time we got to Marrakech the post offices were closed and therefore we couldn't post anything back home. It would've been great to have an option for a pre-arranged box for a set price (including postage etc) which could then be sent on by the local tour office.

The amount of free time was occasionally too long, however it was appropriate for the climate. Optional activities were affordable and well explained.

I would like to thank Peregrine for such a fantastic trip to Egypt. The itinerary was well thought out, and our local guide, Ola Samir was absolutely amazing!. She was extremely helpful in regards to a difficult situation we experienced upon arriving in Cairo, where our baggage was misplaced by the airline. Ola spent a great deal of her own free time in assisting us when our luggage was eventually found. Ola's knowledge of the different areas visited was fantastic, and her excellent sense of humor and personality made every day fun, and very informative. She is epatetic and approachable to all demographics. I would thoroughly recommend her as a guide for future tours. I am a Flight Centre Travel consultant in Brisbane, and will highly recommend Peregrine as the tour company to travel with. Thank you Ola Samir for an unforgettable trip, and thank you Peregrine for your amazing itinerary! I have had a fantastic holiday! Kind regards, Alana Moore.

Firstly we had a wonderful trip. Loved the accommodation, sights and guides. I might like to suggest one thing to protect the guide and guests in relation to the tipping kitty. If the guide chooses to tip, he/she should nominate a member of the tour to do so. They give the tip from the kitty. The guest doesnt think the guide is being dishonest with the money and the guide shows he/she is upfront. I believe at times our guides had too much free reign tipping, it became a tool for him to pay gratuity to those he pleased (like a street cleaner for example. Whilst a necessary service, did not directly benefit our group)

I can't realy fault it from an organisation / tour leader / itinerary standpoint apart from a few points. The first is security - I and another member of the party were robbed in Aswan. We were warned and given information about security but I think the level of security should be informed i.e. low in Cairo and very high in Aswan. Also the markets contain the usual tourist junk and aren't worth a visit. Hotels - as we only slept in them they were OK and functional. Grand Pyramids is next to a busy fly-over and another hotel should be considered.

This tour was awesome! It enabled me to experience and comprehend the depth of history that is at your fingertips. I was constantly awed by the beauty surrounding me as we made our way through Egypt and into Jordan. Cruising our way down the Nile, stopping off at ancient sights, is such a lovely way to see this part of the world. The hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings and the Nile River Basin was so beautiful and a great way to start the New Year. Exploring Petra and having it all too ourselves ( what's a bit of snow!) is a once in a lifetime experience. Although, I went at a politically unstable time, I felt that the safety of the group was of prime concern to the guide and/ or driver. I highly recomdend this trip... We have had a glitch with our onward visa to India and he has been so helpful and obliging to us in helping with visa applications and taking the trouble to transport us to the visa centre in his off time. He has helped with translations, bartering where appropriate and we could not praise him more highly. Just a lovely bloke.

The knowledge imparted by the guides is excellent and you cant ask for more than your own personal Egyptologist to guide you through Egypt. In spite of all the world issues in that area we were always safe and never felt any distress whatsoever.

Tunisia is an unexpectedly varied and worthwhile destination, rich with both natural and cultural treasures. Where else can you ride a camel into the Sahara to a Roman fort to watch the sunset? The range of historical and cultural sites on this tour kept us constantly engaged. Our guide was organised, enthusiatic and knowledgeable. The country proved to be very safe for tourists, regardless of the political situation. We left with a love of this country and a much greater understanding of the culture, politics and history of North Africa. I can strongly recommend this tour.

Overall I was very happy with Peregrine and I would definately travel with them again. One of the best aspects of peregrine is that they limit the group so that even if the group is at capacity it is still quite small. I also found Peregrine to be very reasonably priced for what the package included.

I can highly recommend this tour to anyone with an academic or cultural interest in Tunisia, or North Africa in general. As a historian, it was wonderful to view the diverse and relatively unspoilt terrain of such a large portion of the country. The tour has just the right mix of historical sights and places of natural interest and is most ably guided by a knowledgeable and affable guide. The driver and vehicle were excellent, so we felt safe and comfortable at all times. The hotels were pleasant and well clear of the usual tourist resorts. However, they were excellently positioned for a trek into the desert and a swim in the azure waters of the Mediterranean. This is Tunisia as it is meant to be experienced!

Great idea giving money to guide to pay necessary tips. poor. Sights to visit worthwhile highlights included desert trek and overnight camp, drive through Atlas mountains, visiting a home in small villages as well Medinas and Kasbahs. We also had the opportunity of sampling the non-tourist side of Egypt, eating in local restaurants, visiting shops specialising in things such as perfumes, papyrus making and the processing of alabaster. In respect of Egyptian religion, my daughter and I covered our heads whenever we were of-the-beaten-path and we were treated with courtesy and smiles wherever we went. We never felt unsafe. If they ever air condition the tombs, I'll be back (only joking about the air conditioning ...though ...). The Grand Pyramid Hotel didn't feel as welcoming, staff wise. Also I was hoping the food selection would have had more Egyptian food, not Italian, Thai etc.

He wanted us to leave with a postive experience of jordan and the spirituality of muslim culture.

I was not so impressed with the Independent Alexandria experience...the hotel had no info about the city,no maps, and the guide who didn't even know my name was with me for less than two hours and was not interested in what I might be doing for the rest of my "three days". We went to see the rocks that reflect the grand civilizations of the Middle East – the majestic, pyramids of Giza, the magnificent tombs of Petra, the masterfully formed walls and gates of Jerusalem’s Old City, and the endless array of rock formed temples, churches, and mosques that serve as the foundations for three of the world’s great religions. Yet, while we stood in awe of the accomplishments of the ancients, our hearts were captured by the struggles of the region’s people and reflected in a different set of rocks today -- the rocks thrown by demonstrators at riot-gear clad soldiers in Tahrir Square; the boulders bulldozed unto the driveway of a Palestinian Christian farmer to keep him from reaching the surrounding Israel Settlements; the piles of concrete from yet another demolished Bedouin village; and the newly poured, rebar reinforced, concrete walls separating Palestinians in the West Bank from those in Israel in the name of security.

Our trip was amazing, and the information provided was excellent. I have two comments; it may have ended up being more expensive than we planned because of all the added incredible experiences we had. I suggest you advise people to have an additional budget amount in mind before they sign up, kind of an informal way of not being surprised afterwards. Also, toilets for women are a definate problem in Egypt, and the tour leader should be very very aware of where a usable toilet can be found in all locations. Lastly, the street vendors are stunningly aggressive, and the Egyptian tourist bureau needs to rein them in or risk loosing tons of potential sales to westerners who do not appreciate the aggravation of fending these people off. I would have bought alot more trinkets if they had just let me alone for five minutes.

This is an excellent Egypt trip for families, taking in most of the important sights. Having a local guide to take us through the whole trip was invaluable, we have travelled extensively overseas but would have found it differcult/less useful without a good local guide in Egypt.

The itinerary was very well organised and followed a thoughtful process. The trip flowed with ease as a result of Ahmed's skills and experience as a tour leader.

PGNA Tour was a comprehensive coverage of Egyptian history in time allotted. The 7 day cruise allowed for some unwinding from busy schedule. In all a very pleasant trip.

We absolutely loved every part of our trip to Egypt and Jordan. Our tour leaders and guides were fabulous, friendly, professional and really well organised. I would particularly like to thank Ramy who went out of his way to personalise the Egypt experience for us and looked after us really well. The kids still miss him!  I enjoyed the opportunities we had to experience local life (local travel, local meals, local school) as well as the tourist sites. I would recommend Peregrine to any family looking for something different to do with the kids!

More information regarding the weather desert was very cold for the time of year. The trip was fantastic. As for the tour leaders Big Mo could not do any more for you, very friendly, helpful could not ask for a better tour guide. The others were also friendly. the hotels were clean but the breakfasts could be greatly improved. They dont seem to cater for western style foods.

Tour Leader Egypt - Very Satisfied with both overall leader and those taking specific sightseeing exoperiences.  Tour leader introduced little extras such as a local cafe etc for a local meal when appropriate.  Alternatives or little extras good, donkey ride through village, balloon ride, Abu Simbu etc.  Tour Leader Jordan - Did exactly what was listed and nothing more, would not answer questions or wait until group assembled to give his very brief outlines ( the group did not straggle but of course cannot be in a very tight bunch all the time).  We would really have benefitted from specific tour guides especially at Jerash.  Many in the group would have liked to go to Bethany instead of time at the Dana Valley.  Accommodation at hotels good, boat rarely had a boat moored beside it on the river side which gave us a good view, train a bit squashy.

Go for it.  Once you are out of the cities Morocco is like being perpetually on a movie set for a biblical film.  Make sure you are aware that there is a possibility of 2 nights on the floor of a dormitory in the Berber Village.  Make sure you have a torch for the desert.  I found a head lamp worked very well, especially when using the squat toilet.
