Highlights of Lebanon
5000 years ago, when Sidon was still just a fishing village, Byblos was already well on the way to becoming a major Mediterranean port. The city’s principal Goddess (Baal-lat) was important to the Egyptian pharaohs, who presented her temple with many offerings.
Later, Byblos came under the control of Ramses II, and later still the Phoenicians took control of the area. Greeks, Romans, Crusaders and Arabs all followed and each successive wave of conquerors has left their mark on this small, but fascinating country. We delve right into the beautiful Qadish Valley and marvel at the cedars that helped bring this land its power in ancient times. Driving via the mountains we reach the outstanding Roman site at Baalbek, with its massive acropolis containing the remnants of the Temple of Jupiter and the well-preserved Temple of Bacchus. We also explore the charming 19th century palace of Beit Eddine and visit the Crusader castle in Sidon. Our trip ends in Beirut, where we have ample time to discover elegant shops, delicious food, great coffee and one of the best museums in the Middle East.
