Leptis Magna

Seas of blue and gold surround you in Libya, a rugged, adventurous ride of a country that rewards the bold and curious. The North African coastline is home to the atmospheric old capital, Tripoli, World War II battlegrounds, and spectacular Greek and Roman remains. Leptis Magna is a sweeping, simply gorgeous sight: an ancient theatre, Corinthian columns and many other ruins backing on to an emerald sea. Be sure to venture inland for a dose of Libya’s austere, idyllic heart. The desert rules here, its grand design determining where oasis towns pop up, and where desert lakes appear, mirage-like, for intrepid bathers to wallow in. Perhaps best of all are the Acacus Mountains – the abrupt flashes of black basalt stunning against the golden desert floor, the mountains’ rock art their glorious surprise.
