Syria

The southern site of Bosra offers a good starting-point: amidst a compellingly alien landscape of stark volcanic plains stands Roman remains gloriously embellished with Arabian flourishes. Welcome to Syria, where history and nature have conspired to gather a collection of staggering sights. From discovering the atmospheric ‘dead cities’ to exploring the extraordinary ruins of Palmyra in Syria’s desert; from the enchanting, imposing crusader castle Krak des Chevaliers to the colonnaded Cardo Maximus of Apamea, set in the country’s moorlands. Like the riches on show in cosmopolitan Damascus’s spice souk, Syria dazzles in its variety and diversity.

Secrets of Jordan & Syria

Undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable and satisfying tours we have ever undertaken - and with work and pleasure that takes in more than 50 countries. For us it was the right mix of stunning ancient sites, superb scenery, welcoming local people and a number of big 'surprises' along the way e.g. how good Palmyra was. Unfortunately the power of modern communication and information systems means that you often know too much before you travel - it is good to be ambushed from time to time in a nice way. Something of this quality in North Africa would be very appealing.

Petra in Jordan was the most spectacular piece of history I have seen since my first view of Macchu Pichu.  The initial view of the 'Treasury' is just a tasty morsel of the meal of history that will unfold before your eyes as you proceed into the inner sanctum of Petra.  I could not believe my eyes
