  • Why we love Middle East & North Africa

    • Cities don't come any more atmospheric or exotic than those you explore here: the busy, beautiful bazaars of Iran; Morocco's medinas, each an endless warren of inviting alleys and lanes; Jerusalem's unique blend of religious history and iconic sights; Egypt's variety, from bustling Cairo to languorous Aswan
    • Both more glorious in reality than any postcard or photo can hope to convey, the twin stars of Jordan and Egypt really do need to be seen to be believed
    • Morocco has a wonderful power to ‘transport’. In the narrow, shaded alleys of the souks of Fez, where the stalls are arranged by craft, a wall of mirrors turns into a bank of shiny brass. Overlaid with the pungent aroma of the nearby tannery, it could be any year, any century.
    • No matter how high your expectations, Al Khazneh (The Treasury) in Petra will exceed them. And while you can travel from the front gate by donkey or carriage, we think an essential part of the experience is the walk in

    Safety information

Your safety is our top priority. It’s one of the main things we consider when designing and operating our trips. Here’s some of the ways we help to keep you safe, and a few of the things you can do to make your trip memorable for all the right reasons. Before you travel We monitor travel alerts provided by the Australian, UK, USA and Canadian governments on a daily basis. Before a tour goes on sale we assess any risks and decide how to reduce and manage these. If we determine that an entire trip, part of a trip or an activity is too risky we won’t do it. It’s as simple as that. If we can’t address the issues and improve conditions we might modify an itinerary, change the accommodation or even decide not to travel to a certain location. Our overseas staff and local leaders are trained to address any health and safety concerns during trips. Before you travel, we’ll give you an emergency phone number. You’ll also get comprehensive pre-departure information, with information about vaccinations and other relevant health issues. We’ll also tell you if there’s any special clothing or equipment you need to bring. During your trip: You local leader is trained in first aid and always carries a first aid kit. Being a local means that if something does go wrong they know fastest and most effective way to get help. We’ll also give you a 24-hour emergency number in addition to the emergency destination telephone number. What you can do: Read through all the information we send you. If you’ve got any questions we’re always available to help. Keep an eye out for travel alerts by consulting your local Foreign Office. We also monitor these daily so that we can modify tours if necessary. Get some medical travel advice about the countries you are visiting, particularly about vaccinations and the type of personal first aid kit you should carry. Make sure you tell us any medical conditions, special needs or dietary requirements you might have. Get your vaccinations and take relevant medication well before travelling so they have time to take effect.

More emphasis needed on level of fitness for this trip. Some people pay little regard to proper footwear and need for walking fitness.Peregrine need to be proactive with clients to ensure that they do not ruin others experience due to their low level of preparation. This did not happen on this trip, but was reported by others on a trip on Amalfi. This was Peregrines first Sardinian tour and was excellent

Its a great country to visit, but you need to be flexible as the leaders vary the programme from the Trip Notes, so you may not be taken to all the listed highlights. Do your own research as there are some days when you will be on your own in hotels that have no information on what is available locally for eating and visits.

Theegyptian leg of our trip was excellent due to the quality of the tour leader, whose knowledge was incredible and his fantastic sense of humor and ability to impart his knowledge so that everyone could understand the importance of each temple or each area towards the development of Egypt as a country, a culture and how this related to the rest of humanity was incredible! Some of the various hotel facilities were mediocre at best but the travel experiences, the efficient operation re transfers, connections etc made up for this. A wonderful experience.

My experience was full of surprises including the noise and chaos of the traffic in Cairo, the grace and majesty of a hot air balloon flight at Luxor, the music and sheesha of the evening cafe life in Aswan, the enormous Lake Nasser and relocated Ramses temple of our flying visit to Abu Simbel, and the afternoons of cool drinks and warm conversation on the Nile cruise.

It was a wonderful holiday. Our guide, Mohammed ALi was very knoweldgeable, customer focussed, entertaining and obviously enjoyed his work.

Many guides are the "look and point" type guide. Mohammed did not do this. If he did he made sure we could all see what he was referring to. Theb "look and point"type guides are useless. Often you are trying to look at something you have never seen before and therefore you miss it entirely.

Mohammed was very patient with us and he made the trip a sucessful and enjoyable time.

Egypt very interesting overall, hot. The Cruise was very pleasant. I did feel a little overwhelmed by the street traders in Egypt and at times felt I was being hustled.

Jordan was also very pleasant and interesting, although the climbing was difficult at times. It was cooler than Egypyt and very clean and peaceful.

The local leaders were excellent ,knowlegable and good fun. The political situation in Egypt meant fewer tourists ( good ) but more vendors haggling which was confronting.Prepare yourself mentally beforehand for chaos , dust , noise ,appalling traffic and dirt, and then be stunned by the Pyramids and Petra and Wadi Rum .

the jordan explorer is a great way to see the highlights of what jordan has to offer. this was backed by an excellent guide in magdi, who was very knowledgable in all aspects of life, history and the culture of not only jordan, but how jordan relates to both the ancient and modern worlds. He wanted us to leave with a postive experience of jordan and the spirituality of muslim culture.

the value of the trip was good, in relation to the value of the cost of living and expenses in jordan. i would recommend around 300USD as adequate amount of spending money. the level of accommadation was right, which would suit most people.

Overall jordan is an interesting country steeped in history, a safe country to travel within, with plenty on offer to travellers wanting something out of the ordinary.

It was a fantastic trip overall and I would recommend to anyone to not hesitate in heading to that part of the world (Egypt, Jordan and Israel) regardless of what you are hearing presently - Jan 2012. Egypt in particular is very safe and with a good tour guide provided, you'll not miss on anything.
Would strongly recommend anyone travelling from as far as North America and Australasia to land perhaps a day or two before the trip starts to you get over the worst of the jet lag, as your mind needs to be fresh for the first days worth of major Egyptian sites.
Accommodation was generally very good across the board, some cases you just have to get out of your first world mentality and accept a few things. Peregrine do explain most of this, so there should be no surprises.
Thoroughly enjoyed myself and luckily had great tour guides and group members to make this holiday one of my best.

My Classical Egypt experience was fantastic as was our leader Hassaan Mostafa. He was probably the best guide I have ever had, knowledgeable of the subject, efficient and caring. He rang me a few times after I had left the group to make sure I was OK. All the arrangements were perfect. I was not so impressed with the Independent Alexandria experience...the hotel had no info about the city,no maps, and the guide who didn't even know my name was with me for less than two hours and was not interested in what I might be doing for the rest of my "three days". But I would certainly do Egypt again and recommend it.

We went to see the rocks that reflect the grand civilizations of the Middle East – the majestic, pyramids of Giza, the magnificent tombs of Petra, the masterfully formed walls and gates of Jerusalem’s Old City, and the endless array of rock formed temples, churches, and mosques that serve as the foundations for three of the world’s great religions. Yet, while we stood in awe of the accomplishments of the ancients, our hearts were captured by the struggles of the region’s people and reflected in a different set of rocks today -- the rocks thrown by demonstrators at riot-gear clad soldiers in Tahrir Square; the boulders bulldozed unto the driveway of a Palestinian Christian farmer to keep him from reaching the surrounding Israel Settlements; the piles of concrete from yet another demolished Bedouin village; and the newly poured, rebar reinforced, concrete walls separating Palestinians in the West Bank from those in Israel in the name of security.

Our trip was amazing, and the information provided was excellent. I have two comments; it may have ended up being more expensive than we planned because of all the added incredible experiences we had. I suggest you advise people to have an additional budget amount in mind before they sign up, kind of an informal way of not being surprised afterwards. Also, toilets for women are a definate problem in Egypt, and the tour leader should be very very aware of where a usable toilet can be found in all locations. Lastly, the street vendors are stunningly aggressive, and the Egyptian tourist bureau needs to rein them in or risk loosing tons of potential sales to westerners who do not appreciate the aggravation of fending these people off. I would have bought alot more trinkets if they had just let me alone for five minutes.
