    Itinerary

    Day 1-2 - Anchorage - Denali NP

    • There will be an important welcome meeting at 7:30am this morning. Meet in the hotel reception/lobby. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting so please ensure you have all details on hand to provide to your leader. You should have packed your bags and have eaten breakfast so that you are fresh and ready to start the journey.
    • Located in south-central Alaska on the shores of Cook Inlet, Anchorage is a unique urban environment situated in the heart of the wilderness. Established in 1914 as the construction headquarters for the Alaskan Railroad, it's the state's largest and most sophisticated city and home to more than half of its occupants.
    • As there's no time spent in Anchorage on this trip we recommend you arrive a few days early to see the sights. If you need help booking extra accommodation, our reservations team will be able to assist.
    • After leaving Anchorage you will travel to Denali National Park.
    • Surrounding Mt. McKinley, the tallest peak in North America, Denali offers a vast refuge for a variety of wildlife. Wolves, caribou, and Dall sheep call Denali home, as does the mighty grizzly bear. Two scenic bus tours (included with park admission) take you through the pristine backcountry of the park, with opportunities to view these majestic animals in their natural habitat and enjoy incredible views of the unique landscape of tundra and taiga.
    • A wide range of optional activities are available such as river rafting, dogsled demonstrations and hiking, for all fitness and adventure levels. For a real treat why not try an optional scenic flight to get a good view of Mount McKinley’s towering peak. You could even opt for a glacier landing!
Carlo Creek Cabins Denali or similar

    Day 3 - Alaska Range

    • You will head into the heart of the Alaska mountain range where you will spend the night in rustic cabins.
    • The Alaska Range is the highest mountain range in North America, and includes Mount McKinley - the highest peak in North America. Here you will experience the quiet lakes of the tundra and watch for grazing caribou. This is a birder's paradise, with many species often sighted, and the fishing is also excellent, with the chance to go fishing for grayling.
    Maclaren Lodge or similar

    Day 4-5 - Wrangell-St Elias National Park

    • Leaving the Alaskan mountain range, you will venture off the main highway into the heart of Wrangell-St Elias National Park.
    • Wrangell-St Elias is the largest national park in the USA and is some six times the size of Yellowstone. The scale of everything here is enormous: four major mountain ranges meet here, and the park includes 9 of the 16 highest peaks in the USA including Mt Blackburn and Mt Sanford.
    • There are also huge chains of glaciers within the park. The high country is covered with snow year round, resulting in extensive icefields and glaciers. Sheep and mountain goats patrol the craggy peaks, and the park is also home to caribou, moose, and brown and black bears.
    • Here we camp on the banks of the Kennicott River in the shadow of Mount Blackburn with a beautiful view of Root Glacier. The next day is free to explore this vast wilderness region including the historic area of McCarthy and Kennicott.

    Day 6-7 - Valdez

    • Climbing the Thompson Pass you will arrive in Valdez (pronounced ‘Val-dees’).
    • Tucked away at the end of a glacier-carved fjord and called the ‘Switzerland of Alaska’ due to its surrounding snow-capped mountains, this is the most northerly ice-free port in the Western Hemisphere and the terminus of the Alaskan Pipeline that stretches 1300 kilometres (over 800 miles) to Prudhoe Bay.
    • There's an option to kayak on Prince William Sound and view the picturesque Columbia Glacier. Other summer activities include hiking, museums and wildlife spotting.

Day 8-9 - Kenai Fjords National Park

    • After an awe-inspiring ferry ride through Prince William Sound you will arrive in the colourful fishing village of Seward, the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park.
    • Established in 1980, Kenai Fjords National Park covers an area of approximately 4,600 sq km on the Kenai Peninsula. The park is named for the numerous fjords carved by glaciers moving down the mountains from the icefield. The field is the source of at least 38 glaciers, including the Harding Ice Field and Bear Glacier. Taking a boat out into the fjords is a great way to see the area.

Day 10-11 - Kachemak Bay Wilderness Camp

    • You will then travel on to Homer and board a boat to take you to your wilderness camp overlooking Kachemak Bay. Experience a true Alaskan adventure in this remote wilderness paradise, with included activities such as sea kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, and beach combing. You’ll also get to appreciate home-cooked meals, including a salmon bake, while basking in the breathtaking scenery.
    Across the Bay or similar

    Day 12 - Anchorage

    • Today you will head back to Anchorage.
    • This tour ends at the gateway hotel at approximately 5pm. No accommodation is included tonight. If you would like to stay longer, we can book your post-tour accommodation at the gateway hotel if required. If you are planning to fly out tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 9pm to allow for any delays.
