We have a great respect for the environment; it not only sustains us, but also provides us with much of the natural beauty that we are lucky enough to explore through our journeys abroad. As such, we are committed to protecting the environment and using resources in a fair, efficient and responsible way wherever possible.
We design our trips in a manner that minimises the physical impact on the destinations we travel to. We want to ensure these beautiful locations are just as lovely for years and generations to come.
How are we achieving this?
We appreciate that climate change is one of the most urgent issues of our time. Tourism, as an industry, is significantly impacted by climate change, but it is also an industry that is, in part, responsible for environmental degradation. As such, we feel it is our duty to minimise our impact, and we will do whatever we can to help sustain the environment.
The offset project we invest in is the Alize Çamseki wind farm in Turkey. The farm’s wind turbines produce around 82,000 MWh of electricity each year – which in turn inhibits approximately 52,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.
We offset our global emissions including our offices, retail stores and trips by offering significant monetary contributions to internationally certified carbon abatement projects. As a result, our company is considered carbon neutral.
The majority of our trips are Carbon Offset. We also ensure our trips are low impact by design. We use public transport where possible, stay in locally owned accommodation and eat at locally owned restaurants where we know the food to be locally sourced. We also support initiatives that encourage water conservation, employ local guides to help keep money in local hands and economies and also to learn from indigenous rural communities about their sustainable agriculture practices. We always encourage our travellers to reduce, reuse and recycle, and we offer them the opportunity to offset the most carbon intensive portion of their trip – the flight, when they book travel with us.
In our offices and stores
We actively work to reduce and offset our environmental impact in our offices and stores.
Measure: We comprehensively measure emissions using a Carbon Assessment Worksheet, which monitors our electricity, gas, waste, business travel and water use.
Avoid: We avoid unnecessary waste where possible. An example of this is setting up Skype calls rather than travelling to meet face-to-face.
Reduce: We’ve significantly reduced paper waste and waste to landfill by employing a comprehensive recycling program within our offices. We also reduce use and wastage in any other aspects of the business that allow for it.
Offset: Any emissions that we can’t avoid or reduce we offset by investing in high-quality renewable projects.
