Bolivia

Bolivia

A country like no other. Spanish colonialism didn't make as great an imprint on Bolivia as neighbouring countries, and the result is a fascinatingly different culture. The land, too, is extraordinary: half altiplano, half jungle, Bolivia is all adventure. Drive the hallucinatory, mesmeric landscapes of the Salar de Uyuni - the worlds largest salt flats, standing 4000 metres above sea level - then head for La Paz's happy chaos. Every street's a market here, the coca-chewing, traditionally dressed, bowler-hatted traders selling everything from the freshest fruit to magic charms. Wandering the kaleidoscopic streets is an addictive pleasure, then head to where it all began: Tiahuanaco, Bolivia's most important ruins and arguably Andean civilisation's birthplace.

Be prepared for the altitude and the' water'. Don't do too much on the first day in Cusco, you need to rest and get used to the altitude.

Well worth doing even in the wet season...maybe better in the wet if you like birds and orchids.
