Amazon in Focus

Trip rating
  • At times, it is impossible to believe a place like the Amazon Jungle can exist. And yet here you are, standing deep within its five and a half million square kilometres of rainforest. It feels like the world where time began. Strange and fascinating creatures dwell on the forest floor; jaguars stalk silently at night, leafcutter ants build their underground tunnels and colourful frogs stand out among the dark leaves. Saddleback tamarins and squirrel monkeys make their home among the trees overhead while spangled cotinga, parrots, toucans and trogons all share the same blue sky.

    Why we love it

    • All activities at Napo Wildlife Centre resort
    • 2 hour boat ride into the Amazon

    Day 1 - Quito

On arrival you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel, located on a winding street with a history stretching back to 1480. The afternoon is free to make your own discoveries.

    La Casona de la Ronda

    Day 2 - Quito ~ Amazon

This morning you are transferred to the airport for a flight over the Andes to Puerto Francisco de Orellana (or El Coca). A local guide will take you to the Napo River port for the two-hour motorboat ride to your lodge. A late afternoon arrival allows for free time before dinner.

    Day 3 - Amazon

The Napo Wildlife Centre Amazon Lodge consists of 12 luxury cabins. Head up the 30-foot canopy tower to get your bearings, ascending through different levels of the forest to emerge on top of a huge ceiba tree. Return to the lodge for a typical Ecuadorian lunch followed by activities of your choice: swim in the lake with your guides, climb a tree tower for more bird watching or just relax in your hammock.

    Day 4 - Amazon

Today you will visit the best parrot clay licks in Ecuador. Clay licks form an important part of the biology of parrots and macaws. Enjoy lunch before an afternoon visit to the interpretation area where you can learn about the ancestral Kichwa community of Aangu and share a traditional ceremony with the shaman.
