Guatemala
Postcard-pretty Lake Atitlan has been busy capturing the imagination of those who visit for centuries: perfect volcanic cones form a backdrop for travellers as they bob along in boats between shoreline villages. Swooningly beautiful, but the lake by no means exhausts Guatemala's knockout sights. A stroll around atmospheric Antigua's colonial heart, and exploring the magnificent jungle ruins of Tikal with its resident parakeets and howler monkeys, give a wonderful dose of Guatemala's glorious past, while the highland market at Chichicastenango is a full-on, no-holds-barred sensory overload of the here and now.

A great mix of Mayan sites and Mexican and Guatemalan towns and markets. Colour and life and history and good food.

Most memorable part of the trip - the similarities and the differences between the ancient sites we visited... and the awe inspiring constructions we saw and climbed upon.
