The Kingdom of Laos

The Kingdom of Laos

Trip rating
  • In the 14th century, Laos went by a far more romantic moniker: Lan Xang Hom Kao or ‘The Kingdom of a Million Elephants Under a White Parasol’. It referred to the formidable war machine of its monarch, Prince Fa Ngum. The metaphor remains apt today in a country that retains a deep connection with its jungle heart while adopting the gentleness of a living Buddhist faith.

    Itinerary

    Day 1 & 2 - Luang Prabang

Sabai dee! On arrival you’re met and transferred to your hotel, Satri House. At the turn of the last century, it was home to Prince Souphanouvong. Meet your leader at one of Laos’ premier restaurants, the Blue Lagoon. The next morning, early risers can ensure successful progress in the next life by presenting alms (sticky rice) to the daily procession of monks. Then a tour of the city and an afternoon visit to the gorgeous Kuang Si Waterfalls.

A luxurious interpretation of 19th century colonial travel. By elephant, by foot and by raft you make your way to your luxury tent for a sumptuous dinner and peaceful night in the Laos jungle. The following morning, ride bareback elephant to the river for a bath (the elephant’s, not yours!). You’ll be invited to meet some local villagers before dinner at L’Elephant in Luang Prabang.
