  • Why we love South East Asia

    • The popular image of South East Asia is often of the locals, and no wonder. Whether it’s a saffron-robed monk, conical-hatted farmer or colourful street hawker, wherever you go in the region a smile is always at the ready
    • In Burma, our local leaders will show you Rangoon’s golden Shwedagon Pagoda, the bustling U Bien teak bridge at sunset, the silver sands of Ngwesaung Beach and the amazing leg-rowers on Inle Lake
    • Hire a bike in Hoi An and cycle to An Bang Beach from your accommodation to relax among the sun chairs under the palm-frond umbrellas. If you feel peckish it’s not unknown for restaurant owners to swim out and check their crab pots, then bring you back a meal
    • In Ayuthaya, Thailand you’re hosted in a traditional teak house. And when you take a culinary tour you’ll cook for Buddhist monks in Sukhothai on their morning alms round
    • See Borneo’s big drawcard wildlife in their natural habitat, and follow the well-worn Headhunters Trail in the footsteps of the Kayan warriors
    • A drink at Phnom Penh’s rowdy Foreign Correspondent’s Club contrasts with a gentle Laotian river cruise and caves with miniature Buddhist statues

    Safety information

Your safety is our top priority. It’s one of the main things we consider when designing and operating our trips. Here’s some of the ways we help to keep you safe, and a few of the things you can do to make your trip memorable for all the right reasons. Before you travel We monitor travel alerts provided by the Australian, UK, USA and Canadian governments on a daily basis. Before a tour goes on sale we assess any risks and decide how to reduce and manage these. If we determine that an entire trip, part of a trip or an activity is too risky we won’t do it. It’s as simple as that. If we can’t address the issues and improve conditions we might modify an itinerary, change the accommodation or even decide not to travel to a certain location. Our overseas staff and local leaders are trained to address any health and safety concerns during trips. Before you travel, we’ll give you an emergency phone number. You’ll also get comprehensive pre-departure information, with information about vaccinations and other relevant health issues. We’ll also tell you if there’s any special clothing or equipment you need to bring. During your trip: You local leader is trained in first aid and always carries a first aid kit. Being a local means that if something does go wrong they know fastest and most effective way to get help. We’ll also give you a 24-hour emergency number in addition to the emergency destination telephone number. What you can do: Read through all the information we send you. If you’ve got any questions we’re always available to help. Keep an eye out for travel alerts by consulting your local Foreign Office. We also monitor these daily so that we can modify tours if necessary. Get some medical travel advice about the countries you are visiting, particularly about vaccinations and the type of personal first aid kit you should carry. Make sure you tell us any medical conditions, special needs or dietary requirements you might have. Get your vaccinations and take relevant medication well before travelling so they have time to take effect.

This was a memorable tour. It was very well organised to visit important sites and interesting places. The tour is advertised as 12 days but really we thought it consisted of 10 days and 11 nights as Day 1 was only an evening meeting up in the hotel and day 12 was just breakfast which we all did independently so couldn't really be counted as a day. In fact we were so confused that we had to book an extra night in Yangon as we had arranged a flight for the following day.

My Leader in India and most recently in Cambodia have made my journeys an absolute joy. I have felt safe and comfortable as I explore foreign cities, countries and cultures. My accommodation and travel companions have superseded all expectation. For anyone anxious about adventure travel I would highly recommend Intrepid. See the world, it's wonderful.

Hotles and meals were all good, and I am unable to falut anything.

The trip was very well paced, the hotels were all very comfortable and of a very good standard (especially at Bagan, Inle Lake and at the beach for our final 3 nights) and the activities and sites included were all excellent. I'm also really glad that we decided to do the 17 day tour - the Golden Rock & surrounding countryside is well worth seeing and the time to unwind at the beach before heading back to work was ideal.

Following on from our 5 day tour of Cambodia with Peregrine, my wife and I undertook this small group tour. Flying into HCMC we met a leader at 6pm and provided his outline for the 15 day trip and then took us to our welcome dinner...very nice restaurant, food, beverages and views of the city! As we were trying out small group tours for the first time, and having found the Cambodian trip to be excellent...after 15 days with the same group in Vietnam, we say it has been very successful! Overall the trip provided us with a good cross-section appreciation of Vietnam landscapes, people, foods, customs, etc. including; HCMC, Mekong Delta, NaTrang, Hue, Hoi An, My Son, Hanoi, Halong Bay and many places in between.

Having just finished high school, going to Vietnam and seeing first hand things that I had studied in NSW Modern History HSC was great for me, such as 19th and 20th century conflict. But what I also found great was the cultural experience of Vietnam, a country still with fantastic links to it's heritage; rich history spread over millenia which was great to experience

This was our first trip with Peregrine Adventures and we were amazed! The language barrier was no problem and we were able to experience the culture and get to know the Thai people first hand. We have not been able to agree on the best day of the tour, as there were too many to choose from. Hellfire pass, Trekking to Hill Tribe Villages to meet the Karren people, Home Stay on the River, the Rice Barge Lunch Tour, the many temples with a huge knowledge of the Buddhist history, the elephant conservation camp, the many markets and shopping trips. We also used many modes of transport which included: sky train, local bus, elephant, river barge, long tail boat, ferry, bus, songtheaw taxi, and walking (hiking). The accommodation ranged from high end resorts to cultural experience at home stay. This gave us a chance to see the real Thailand, if only for 10 days.

Climb on first day trek is more than "a bit hilly" and pretty severe. Not suitable for anyone with breathing conditions (eg asthma, etc). Should provide option of staying with bus and going to pick up village which was very interesting (guide not needed, very safe). Second day provide suggestion of walk around Mai Chau town in lieu of trek.

The trip was a wonderful experience, well planned and well managed. The sites visited were all very interesting although, purely from a personal point of view I was a little " Pagoda'd Out " by the end. I think one night in Na Trang would have been sufficient with the extra night in Dalat or Hoi An. A microphone is needed for the small coaches used from Saigon onwards as is was a little difficult to hear the Guide on the rough roads

I would pesonally like to thank Peregrine for adapting the Vietnam Culinary Journey to suit the needs of our school group for a private tour. The company was very flexible in changing some of the itinerary to suit the needs of the group and the objectives that we were trying to achieve. Whilst on tour, there was also the opportunity to adjust different aspects depending on how the group was travelling. As a staff member leading the group, duty of care of the students was paramount and the Peregrine Tour Director put strategies in place to ensure that the safety and hygiene of the students was paramount. Participants found out a lot about themselves whilst travelling overseas and increased their knowledge base about Vietnam from a cultural perspective.

The last night at the Lake could have been in the town not at the Lake (which was rather noisy) due to length of time to reach Heho airport. Overall a fantastic experience.

I thought the overall itinerary was great. Loved that most stops were three night stops. I would suggest leaving off the visit to the shop to see long necked women. If may be different if we were in their native environment, but felt that we were to see a horrific practise purely for touristic purposes, which was in contrast to the rest of the trip. However, I don't want that to detract at all from the rest of the tour where I saw wonderful sights, greeted by the very friendly people everywhere and had a great group and leader to travel with.

This was our second trip to Vietnam. we were in Vietnam in 2006, our daughter my husband and I. Thanks to Phuong this trip was better than the last one. Enjoyed the scenic views the country and most of all the people. Wish our journey was a bit longer. It ended too soon.We visited so many places. We all loved Halong bay. It was our second trip to Halong bay. We think that it is like Heaven on earth. So beautiful and enchanting.Vietnam,s past history amazed us. We knew so little about it. Phuong told us so many stories that we shall never forget. Love Vietnam. Thank you. Phuong.

James has ben an absolute gem of a tour guide. He is funny, smart and knows a lot about his history and culture. The only addition I would suggest is a visit to the Golden Mountain in Bangkok. As well there were a few photo moments of three giant buddhas when leaving Sukothai that we could have stopped for a 5 min photo shot. Aside from this this trip was an excellent adventure.

I thought that this was an amazing trip. The only criticism that I have is that I found that there was less free time than I've experienced on a prevous Peregrine trip (or with other similar companies), so it did feel a little rushed. A similar trip could include an additional day in each of Luang Prabang and Siem Reap for optional activities or relaxation. the trip did not need a day in Bangkok.

Too many temples; could have been more outdoor as in countryside outings/activity; not at all impressed with the Jade Hotel in Luang Prabang as it was too far out of town and rooms small and cramped, might have been much nicer in one of the older colonial guest houses in town. Phonsovan hotel a bit poor on services but decent sized rooms. Perhaps the hotels could be asked to turn on the air-conditionong for guests at least 1 hour before arrival, especially as it is an arduous trip across the mountains to Phonsovan and perhaps Peregrine could have some teabags, coffee and milk available or obtainable, or pick hotels that have these things in the room. Other than these few things my husband and I enjoyed the trip and all of the guides were very good.

Each step highlighted different aspects : the commercial hub of Yangon, the imperial and colonial past of Mandalay, the intrinsic role of Buddha in peoples lives in Bagan and the lovely rest in Inle Lake that also showed us some of the ethnic ways of life. Loved it and highly reccommend it to all who are curious and adventurous.

The cooking classes were excellent especially the Red Bridge in Hoi An and Koto on Hanoi.

Peregrine offered a consistently high standard throughout--"everything done right". I particularly appreciated that Peregrine was continually looking for improvements and upgraded our hotel in Chiang Mai on the last day at no added cost.

We're planning to travel with Peregrine again next year.

The tour guides, as always, were very knowledgeable and obliging.

Apart from one exception the accommodation ranged from acceptable to good. The hotel in Phonsavan was marked as basic but truly it was below basic. My husband and I were allocated a room that had mould on the ceiling and walls. The tap in the sink lifted out of the bracket - alas no water in either the sink or shower. We were then changed to another room which was not much better but there was water in the shower. The sink did have water but we were unable to use it as the base was not connected to the outlet pipe. The bathroom flooded when taking a shower as the outlet was located in the wrong spot. We had to request towels, a light bulb, water and toilet paper. The tour guide offered to swap rooms, which we declined.

The hotel in Siem Reap was excellent apart from the air conditioning ceasing to work on the last day.

Overall the tour is good value for money.

The Mekong Explorer trip was an excellent introduction to Laos and Cambodia. The tour leaders were friendly and knowledgeable and took great care of us. Overall the value for money was good.
One main point of feedback would be to encourage Australians to get their Laos visa before arrival. The border crossing wasa shambles and it took several hours of crammed queuing to get the visa sorted. The other is to remind customers that some of the areas visited are quite remote. After the wheel came off our minibus to Phonsovan there were little choices in terms of getting the bus fixed and an already long day of travel turned into a 12 hour + day.
The Cambodia guide, Kheang, rates a special mention for his care and attention and willingness to share his personal stories as an insight into the history of Cambodia.

Burma (or Myanmar as it is known locally) is a fascinating country and particularly at this point in history where they are on the brink of change. I am very pleased I got to travel there whilst it is relatively uncommon to visit and is not swamped by backpackers. There were more tour groups from all over the world than I had thought there would be, but all groups seemed to cater for the more mature and discerning traveller, just as the Peregrine tour did. Don't wait too long before you go - this is a fascinating part of Asia! I will certainly be going back.

The only real dissappointment was that the planned hike to villages around Inle Lake did not happen.

The tour far exceeded our expectations. Our tour leader was Nyi Nyi Tun. He is truly a valuable Peregrine asset. He is extremely professional. He is witty and very knowledgeable. I think I learned more on this tour about the country we (my wife, Okyo, and I)were visiting through Nyi Nyi's wonderful personality than any other of the many countries we have visited. Nyi Nyi truly endeared us to the country of Myanmar.

The trip was fantastic and has changed my idea of land travel forever!! Being my first cycle trip there is no better way to see a country and experience its uniqueness than by bike. This experience was made all even more special with our very small group of 5 and our amazing tour crew- their knowledge, support, flexibility to requests and attention to detail was outstanding and I am not sure this would have been the same if we were in a larger group.

This was our first guided tour and we were a bit apprehensive, but need not have been. Our guide was very good at ensuring that the different interests of the group members were catered for e.g. an art historian, obsessive shoppers were given time to continue their passions while we continued our experience. We were pleasantly surprised at the level of accommodation. One member who sprained an ankle one day one, was cared for, had alternative arrangements made when needed throughout the trip.

Biking Vietnam is the best way to see Vietnam away from the tourist routes. The bikes were good, the team were excellent looking after us very well, the exercise was strenuous but fun, and the countryside was simply amazing and beautiful. Highly recommended.

The trip was memorable. As we have a short time to explore both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, it would be great if you suggested people to arrive early/leave later so they could explore both cities a little more. We loved the boat trip in Halong Bay, really beautiful I wish we couls have stayed an extra day. Hoi An is so pretty and we had a great time there.

Very experienced and knowledgeable guides.Informative about many aspects of Vietnam without overdoing it which is often the case with guides passionate on certain subjects. Thang's been doing it for 10 years so he should be good but still appears fresh and totally motivated and definitely a 5* tour leader.

The genocide museum and killing fields are extremely sobering and very memorable. It made me realize how lucky I am, and emphasized how far the beautiful Cambodian culture and people have developed from that period.  The tour gave us great understanding of and immersion in the Cambodian culture

The clothing shops in Hoi An.  The food.  The music concerts. The mud baths. Walking along the riverbank along the Mekong.  Most of all, the people were wonderful.

All 4 tour leaders were very professional, helpful & knowledgeable.  Nan was  lovely & it was good to see a woman  working in the tourism industry. A special mention to Peung from the Bangkok office who was with us for part of the week in Laos. She was so helpful & we were sad to loose her companionship. Tui was fantastic with a great sense of humour &  ability to chat about anything at all. His pride in his country & willingness to explain the cultural & religious aspects of Laos was commendable. He is very well liked & respected by the local people & the children in particular  to love his visits. Charney was also great & his knowledge of the Angkor Wat complex was amazing. Likewise S P in Phnom Penh who was like a walking encyclopedia.

Our leader Thuy was a competent guide and organiser. His english speaking and comprehension ability is very good and he seems to understand Australians well. He was personable without being too familiar. Given the long periods spent on the road, he could possibly consider increasing the frequency of his commentary on sights and activity taking place. For most it is a new experience.

You see plenty of wildlife at all the places you visit, the trip is varied with a combination of walking and boating, its fairly full-on so there's not a lot of down time but its only a week so they try and pack as much as they can in which is good. You don't need much money as everything is fairly cheap unless you want to drink wine!
