We’ve always been more about destination than accommodation. Adventure for us is a more immersive, cultural experience. Fluffy pillows and a well-stocked minibar aren’t usually what gets our wanderlust flowing. But we do still appreciate quality accommodation that really showcases an authentic slice of local life. It might be a Nonna-run guesthouse in the backstreet of Florence or a tented luxury camp on the Tanzanian savannah. In this series, we’ll be delving into our Little Black Book and showcasing some of the best boutique accommodation around the world. The overnight stays that really stick in the memory.
This week we’re heading for a summer sojourn in the Chianti wine region of Tuscany. Specifically? The gorgeous Castello di Spaltenna, one of our favourite hotels in all of Europe. Thanks to @mattneam for this picture-perfect poolside shot.
Hotel name: Castello di Spaltenna
Destination: Tuscany
If your mind’s eye had to summon the image of a 10th century Tuscan monastery, you’d probably get Castello di Spaltenna down to the last hand-chiselled limestone block. It oozes rustic Italian charm (charm is one of the few things that gets better when it oozes), with rolling hills and vineyards around every corner and sculpted poplar trees dotted throughout the grounds. The rooms are provincial, roomy and charming – the perfect retreat after a gruelling day spent touring cellar doors.
