Why we love this trip

  • Experience Cambodia and Vietnam on a single tour, exploring each country in depth through two comprehensive itineraries.

  • Uncover a wealth of South East Asia’s breath-taking beauty, from the beaches of Nha Trang and the backwaters of the Mekong Delta to the jungles of Cambodia and the wondrous Halong Bay.

  • Learn more about the Buddhists of Siam Reap as you witness the monks’s sacred water blessing ritual.

  • Learn about the rich history of both countries, such as the Khmer Rouge of Cambodia or the Viet Minh of Vietnam.

  • A Mekong Delta guesthouse, seafood lunch and snorkelling trip in Nha Trang and a candlelit dinner in Halong Bay gets you close and personal with Vietnam’s waterways.

  • Explore legendary architecture as you wander through Angkor’s temples, Ho Chi Min’s Cu Chi war tunnels and the Chinese and Japanese marvels of Hoi An.

Is this trip right for you?

  • The bloody rule of the Khmer Rouge is a painful but important part of Cambodian history to confront. If you would rather not visit the Tuol Sleng Prison Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, just let your leader know.

  • You will visit a number of temples on this trip, and this requires a level of modesty. Be sure to bring clothes that cover the arms and pants or skirts that go past the knees. A light scarf is also a good idea for covering shoulders and arms when it’s hot.

  • One night is spent in simple guesthouse accommodation in the Mekong Delta. Rooms have their own bathroom, although may only have cold water available. Mosquito nets and bedding are provided. Most travellers find that this experience is the best way to connect with your local hosts, and get a real sense of life on the Delta.

  • A boat trip from Nha Trang is included, riding in a smaller basket boat, with the opportunity for snorkelling. Let you leader know if you have any concerns about water-based activities.

  • Temperatures in Cambodia can change significantly from day to night, while Vietnam average temperatures vary greatly between South and North. While there is no best time of year, it's best to check the seasonal patterns on our country information page to gauge what the weather will be like and to pack layers to tackle this disparity in weather.

  • With included walking tours in Hoi An and Hanoi, as well as in the caves in Halong Bay, and walking around sites in Hue and the Mekong Delta, you will cover some distance on foot. Be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes

Itinerary

Sua s'dei. Welcome to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. You'll be transferred to your hotel – check with hotel reception for more information about your important group meeting this evening. You might decide to go for a drink at the Foreign Correspondents' Club afterwards.

Notes: The restaurant run by the Friends organisation is closed on public and school holidays. Alternative dinner arrangements will be made at these times.

As you explore this extraordinary labyrinth you will learn more about its history and the 1968 Tet Offensive. A section of the tunnels has been widened to allow tourists to get a feel for what the underground life must have been like. Note that this will be hot and can be a little claustrophobic. To ensure all travellers can be accommodated on board available boats, on rare occasions you will stay on a larger boat (with approximately 12 cabins) and share your boat with another group. Or your group may be split across different vessels, in which case a group leader will be present on each boat, and the route taken and inclusions on board will remain the same.

Kayaking, as well as swimming in the bay from the boats is banned by the local authority.
