Taking a traditional mode of transport used by the indigenous communities of North America, snowshoeing allows you to discover remote alcoves and hidden valleys under the guidance of an expert in polar terrain. Navigate your way across deep snow on lightweight snowshoes and visit places usually inaccessible on foot.
How it works
Each snowshoeing excursion lasts up to three hours. Participants will be led through a variety of snowshoeing expeditions, designed for all abilities, by an expert guide. The number of opportunities to snowshoe will depend on weather conditions and the trip itinerary. We will provide you with snowshoes for the excursion.
How to book
Snowshoeing is offered as an optional activity on many of our Antarctica voyages. Simply ask our team on the ship and they’ll be able to assist you with further information.
Group size and requirements
The size of the group depends on the itinerary you are on. No previous experience is required to participate but it’s generally recommended that you have an average level of fitness. Those who enjoy hiking trails and walking will usually be fit enough to enjoy this activity.
Clothing and equipment
Snowshoes and ski poles are provided. We recommend wearing clothing that are suitable for the polar regions, such as thermal underwear, a breathable jacket, thick socks, sunglasses and backpack. You will be briefed by your expedition leader before the activity. Â
Safety precautions
Our highly qualified guides have many years of climbing, skiing and snowshoeing experience in polar regions and all hold relevant mountain instruction and safety certifications. They aim to provide a personalised and unique experience while maintaining safety to the highest standards.
Participants should ensure their insurance policy covers snowshoeing within a polar region. An additional policy or premium may be required to ensure you are adequately covered.
