Map of Egypt Dahabiya Nile River Cruise - Limited Edition including Egypt

Experience Upper Egypt in style on a this limited-edition, boutique River Nile expedition

Immerse yourself in the spirit of 1920s exploration on this seven-day River Nile journey. Egypt has long fascinated the worldly traveller, and if there were a golden age of travel, it could be traced to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, and further still to the publication of the first Egypt guidebook in 1835. Step back to those times and stay in a plush riverside winter retreat of the Egyptian royal family, enjoy full-board hospitality sailing the Nile on an elegant dahabiya (the Nile houseboat of yore), visit colourful Nubian villages still alive with ancient cultures, and explore must-see ancient sites such as the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Karnak. Retracing the footsteps of the great explorers, this limited edition Upper Egypt adventure shines a light on Nile life like no other.

Why you'll love this trip

  • Immerse yourself in life on the Nile at the ideal pace, enriching your experience of these ancient cultures and histories through the expert guidance of a trained Egyptologist

  • Sailing by dahabiya is a more intimate experience, with visits to sites and islands others don’t see – such as El Kab, the ancient city of Nekheb

  • Stay in Luxor’s opulent Winter Place, an outstanding hotel built in 1886 by British explorers to host royal families from Europe and the East. Our Feature Stay Hotel

  • Explore the great open-air museum of Luxor, visiting sites such as Karnak Temple and the famous Valley of the Kings

  • Enjoy authentic cuisine at every step of the journey, taking in the flavours of the Middle East and the Mediterranean in the atmospheric dining room on deck

Is this trip right for you?

  • Some of the sites we visit involve walking on rocky and/or steep hillsides, and there is often little or no shade. Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes and a hat are essential.

  • There are no engines on dahabiya boats, as they are designed for sailing the Nile. If there is no wind, there could be some minor delays. Each dahabiya has its own small tug that can help if the natural elements fail.

  • Accommodation on the dahabiya includes a full board meal plan (breakfast, lunch and dinner); drinks are offered in the bar area for an additional cost.

  • This trip includes more of the less-known sites. If it's your first time to Egypt you might consider planning some additional time for exploring Cairo.

This is simply an arrival day, so you may arrive at any time (note that hotel rooms are generally only available from after midday). An important welcome meeting will be held at 6 pm. Other than that, the day is yours to spend as you please. Perhaps visit Ancient Thebes, the nearby Luxor Museum or the Luxor Temple, all of which are within walking distance. Your accommodation tonight is the superb Sofitel Old Winter Palace Hotel. Built in 1886, it is located on the Nile Corniche, directly across from the river.

Rise early and head into the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are more than 60 tombs of pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. Explore this sprawling and spectacular place where discoveries are still being made. Tutankhamun's final resting place is also found here. After a visit to the three royal tombs and the tomb of Tutankhamen, continue to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, which is set in a spectacular natural amphitheater. See also the Colossi of Memnon – giant statues once part of an impressive colonnade. In the afternoon, visit Karnak, one of the world's most celebrated temple complexes; built over a period of some 200 years, it has elements dating back to 2055 BC. Your guided tour of the temple reveals its finest sections. In the evening, dine in one of the many restaurants of the Old Winter Palace, relax in the beautiful hotel gardens, or perhaps go for a stroll along the Corniche.
