See the most compelling sights of Mexico, where towns old and new weave a cultural tapestry as colourful as traditional textiles.
Mexico is a land of stark cultural diversity, where traditional indigenous communities live with relative autonomy just hours from bustling modern cities. Seen separately, the sparkling beaches of Playa del Carmen, Maya ruins of Chichen Itza and thriving metropolis of Mexico City would be impressive enough. But the real wonder comes in travelling between them, exploring the cultural and historical ties that bind these seemingly disparate communities together.

Why you'll love this trip
-
Breathe warm salt air in Playa del Carmen, which has all the powdery sand and sapphire ocean that the Caribbean sea is known for
-
Explore a Maya village outside of San Cristobal where the right to autonomy was hard-won decades ago, and a unique spiritual blend of ancient ritual, Catholicism and animism has shaped local tradition and ceremony
-
Discover the culinary paradise of Oaxaca, where you can slurp warm, thick mole (a rich sauce often served over rice) and sample the edible plants and flowers that the indigenous Zapotec people have eaten for centuries
-
Stay in the glorious Hotel Geneva in Mexico City, where many famous intellectuals and artists have gathered over the past century to socialise and escape political tumult
Is this trip right for you?
-
Some included activities, such as guided tours of archaeological sites, can be strenuous. Be sure to bring comfortable and sturdy footwear.
-
There are a few long days of travel, as you'll be covering a lot of ground. So be prepared for some driving. You will, however, make stops at interesting locations along your way to break things up.
-
The tropical climate of Central America means conditions can be hot and humid. Always carry plenty of water with you and stay hydrated, especially on walking tours.
