From the colourful backstreets of Lisbon to the wilds of the Algarve Coast, Portugal is a picture of seaside perfection.
Â
Portugal’s Algarve region is filled with whitewashed cliffs and limestone grottoes carved by ocean waves. Spend your days exploring caves and reclining on golden beaches, before heading to the country’s coastal lagoons for some birdwatching and wildlife spotting. If it’s the urban experience you’re after, hillside Lisbon provides voyagers with incredible ocean views over pastel-coloured buildings and clattering trams where you can wash down the city’s maritime cuisine with a glass of the celebrated port wine. Whether it’s the stout winds off the Atlantic or the warm breeze from the Mediterranean, the coast of Portugal is Adventure Cruising at its best.

Highlights of Portugal

Search for birdlife in Ria Formosa Natural Park
Ria Formosa is a protected area of coastal lagoon considered to be one of Portugal’s Seven Natural Wonders. The park is an important birding area, providing a stopover point for many migrating birds such as the purple heron and the red-rumped swallow; for others, like the purple swamphen and the black-winged stilt, it’s a permanent home.

Sample the seafood in Lisbon
A town of many personalities, Portugal is known for stunning Atlantic Ocean views, the giant Cristo Rei statue of Christ (the reward for many a climber), and quaint trams that trundle their way down narrow lanes. But for many travellers its best spoils are Epicurean; it’s a case of come for the Portuguese tart, stay for the grilled octopus and fresh clams.

Explore the ruins of Silves
Silves was a major trading port during the medieval age when Portugal was under Moorish rule. Remnants of the era can still be found in the historic buildings dotted throughout the urban centre. Despite the earthquake that rocked the region in the 18th century, the impressive red brick castle still looms over the city.
