200,000 years ago in Africa, human life was born. Today, this vast continent is as significant as ever.
On the continent where human life originated, where the jungle steams and the savannah sprawls, there’s a heritage that spans centuries. It’s in the might of Victoria Falls and the passages of Orange River. It’s in the views of Mt Kilimanjaro looming over the Serengeti, where the big five game roam among their human guardians… and hunters. It’s hiding with the mountain gorillas, shy in the emerald forest. But most of all, it’s in the colours and cultures of this great place, from the living voodoo cults in Ouidah to the lip-disk Mursi tribesmen.

Why we love Africa
-
Get right up close to southern Africa's magnificent wildlife. Watch the world’s largest elephants bathe in Botswana’s Chobe River, stalk giraffes and zebras on game drives through Namibia and catch a glimpse of the endangered African wild dog in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
-
Sample exquisite food and fine local wine in the culinary epicentre of Cape Town. Set to the backdrop of Table Mountain, this is one of the most beautiful cities in the world
-
See the diverse tribal cultures of Ethiopia, which have remained untouched by globalisation for thousands of years. Ethiopia is also home to some of the oldest evidence of human existence on the planet
-
Trace the origins of Voodoo through the distinct cities and West African landscapes, to its heartland in the tiny nation of Benin. It’s thought that up to 40 per cent of the local population adhere to the Voodoo religion in some form
-
Trek through Rwanda’s isolated Virunga Mountains in search of gorilla families. While the hike can be challenging, spending time in the quiet presence of these elusive creatures is a profoundly rewarding experience
-
Morocco has the wonderful power to ‘transport’ dip into tangled alleyways in the ancient medinas of Fez and Marrakech, where the stalls are arranged by craft. Overlaid with the pungent aroma of nearby tanneries, it could be any year, any century
