Begin your Panama journey walking the streets of Panama City’s old town, then travel inland to Gatun Lake to see the daily activity at the locks of the canal. Explore the abandoned ruins at Fort San Lorenzo, then follow the lure of the Pearl Islands, drifting from one sublime beach to the next and lounging, swimming and snorkelling along the way. Darien National Park vaunts not only an incredible array of wildlife, but also the indigenous Embera people who are eager to meet visitors to Mogue village. Highlights of Panama
Relax on the Pearl Islands
Named for the jewels the Spanish Conquistadors found beneath the waves, the delicate ecosystems of the Pearl Islands harbour an incredible array of natural beauty. With almost 250 islands to discover, many of them uninhabited, there’s no shortage of water to swim in, reefs to snorkel and beaches to recline on.
Explore the docks of Panama City
Panama’s capital lies on the Pacific Coast, backed by the green of the rainforest. The manmade waterway that runs alongside it is a vital trade link between the Atlantic and the Pacific, giving the city its culturally cosmopolitan edge. The city’s old town Casco Viejo is filled with crumbling colonial architecture and cobblestoned plazas to explore.
Meet the locals of Mogue Embera Reserve
In an opportunity rarely afforded to travellers, paddle up the Mogue River in dugout canoes, passing mangrove forests by the banks, to reach the village of Mogue. The Embera Indians who call Mogue home are one of seven indigenous groups of Panama, known for their traditionally made handicrafts and dances.
