This trip is no longer operating but a new adventure is waiting for you

Why you'll love this trip

  • Not only does this voyage spend time discovering the Antarctic Peninsula, you will also visit the southerly island clusters of South Georgia and Falklands, getting an overall perspective on the region.

  • During your days at sea, enjoy a series of lectures and workshops presented by a leading panel of experts in marine biology, glaciology and Antarctic history, further enhancing your voyage.

  • Consider seeing the Antarctic Peninsula on unforgettable optional adventures, including kayaking in some remote regions of the continent.

  • Appreciate the well-equipped Ocean Endeavour with multiple dining, bar and lounge areas and wellness facilities, as well as a favourable ratio of one expedition crew member to every eight passengers.

Is this trip right for you?

  • Our ice-strengthened ships are big and sturdy, but the Antarctic waters can still be unpredictable and rough. Some people may experience seasickness, especially through the Drake Passage and other open water crossings. There is a doctor on board should you need further assistance.

  • Weather is extreme in the world’s southernmost continent. We’ll provide you with the waterproof boots and an expedition parka, but you should be prepared with lots of layers. Please see the 'Packing' section of the Essential Trip Information for details.

  • Depending on the weather, you’ll be zipping around in a Zodiac boat quite regularly to explore the area and search for wildlife. It can get very cold and wet on the Zodiac and sturdy sea legs are needed for wet and dry landings from the boat.

  • People with reduced mobility may have difficulty participating in all included activities. On land, you’ll be walking over steep terrain, snow and other uneven surfaces. The Ocean Endeavour has a lift, but you’ll need to take the stairs to get to the gangway and some other parts of the ship that the lift does not provide access to.

  • The weather plays a pivotal part in this adventure, and although there’s an itinerary in place, there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to do everything that is planned for. A level of flexibility and openness to embracing the unexpected are important in expedition travel, especially in such a remote area. We may also be confined to the ship during rough weather.

The Ocean Endeavour is a far cry from the expedition vessels of old and, just quietly, we're tipping it’s the place be in the 2021 Antarctic season.

Itinerary

Welcome to Ushuaia – one of the world’s southernmost cities. On arrival at the airport, meet a Peregrine representative and take an included transfer to your pre-expedition accommodation. Before your embarkation tomorrow, attend a welcome meeting this evening to meet your leader and fellow travellers and discuss any further details. If you do happen to arrive early, you are free to explore Ushuaia, perhaps finding a local Argentinian meal.
Accommodation
  • Hotel (1 night)
Meals Included
There are no meals included on this day.
Special Information
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting tonight as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on exactly when the meeting will take place.

An arrival transfer from the airport is included in your voyage fare. This transfer is only valid for passengers arriving in Ushuaia on Day 1 of the itinerary or those who have booked pre-tour accommodation with Peregrine. Full details of the transfer will be sent with your final joining instructions. Speak to a Peregrine booking agent for more information.
This morning, you are free to explore Ushuaia before you transfer to your expedition vessel for embarkation. Once boarded, settle into your cabin and meet your polar crew, setting off in the late afternoon. An included welcome dinner on board will allow you to continue the introductions with staff and fellow travellers. Your ship will cruise down the renowned Beagle Channel, so keep your eyes peeled for your first look at some of the region’s wildlife. After dinner, perhaps enjoy a drink at the onboard bar or retire to your stateroom for the night.

The next two or so days will be spent crossing the Drake Passage. This stretch of water is named after Sit Frances Drake who sailed this in the 16th century and confirmed the convergence of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, but a few decades earlier, Spanish marine explorer Francisco de Hoces sailed south enough to discover this body of water – it is known in Spanish as the ‘Mar de Hoces’, or the Hoces Sea. While crossing this unpredictable passage, enjoy the amenities on board the Ocean Endeavour, including lounge areas, a fitness centre and other wellness facilities. You may also like to hear from leading researchers and scientists as they begin their onboard lecture program. If the conditions are favourable, head out on deck to scour the skies for migrating birdlife and the waters for pods of whales. Your voyage expects to catch sight of the Antarctic Peninsula on the evening of Day 4.

Appreciate three unforgettable days exploring the Great White Continent. Your expert crew has a general itinerary set and will consider the weather, sea and ice conditions to ensure maximum opportunity for shore landings and wildlife spotting opportunities. You can expect to explore the peninsula by land and Zodiac boat during daily excursions, with the chance to see leopard seals, multiple species of penguin and other marine life. After days experiencing the great white outdoors, let the party continue with potentially one or more of Paul Kelly’s three planned performances during this time.

Continue on your voyage towards Elephant Island. Located on the north-eastern fringes of the South Shetland islands, Elephant Island has tall and craggy rock formations. Depending on the weather and sea conditions, your crew will endeavour to cruise via Zodiac and explore this ice-covered island – the place where Sir Ernest Shackleton and his fellow explorers were stranded in 1915. Learn more about this area from your knowledgeable leaders and how impressive the survival of this fateful voyage actually was.

The next couple of days are dedicated to exploring the natural wonders of South Georgia. Marvel at the many seabirds flying above, encounter penguin colonies and spy elephant and fur seal pups. While the wildlife is extraordinary, it’s not all about the animals. The glaciers, mountains and fascinating history of South Georgia are also captivating. The island has been a British Overseas Territory since 1775, and at 3755 square kilometres (1450 square miles) is the territory’s largest island.
