Why you'll love this trip

  • Winter departures mean you can explore the historic sites with fewer crowds to compete with and avoid the blistering heat of Turkey in the high season.

  • Let a local show you the historic sights of Istanbul on a walking tour that visits the Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome of Constantinople, plus the thousands of stalls of the Grand Bazaar.

  • Take a cable car to the lofty ancient city Pergamon to explore the theatres, temples and Altar, then enjoy a lunch of Turkish classic pide (stuffed flatbread).

  • Take a guided visit of the treasures contained in the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations, which features artefacts from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Assyrian periods.

  • Experience the captivating, dance-like worship of the whirling Dervishes during an evening at a local lodge in Bursa.

Is this trip right for you?

  • Choosing this tour over departures in Spring or Summer means that there will not be any opportunity for swimming, we will spend two nights in the Mediterranean city of Antalya but it will not be warm enough for swimming or boating. Please consider our Treasure of Turkey departures for these activities.

  • Temperatures can get cold in Central Anatolia (Cappadocia and Ankara) in November, December and February, it can range from 15 degrees to 5 degrees Celsius and even below zero in the evenings. You need to pack accordingly for this trip. If you are lucky you may get some snow on the fairy chimneys.

  • This trip involves a lot of walking, sometimes on rocky or slippery terrain such as the sites in Goreme. Please bring sturdy walking shoes, but also note that you can sit out the walks if you do not feel up to them.

  • You'll be covering a lot of land during the trip, which means a few long days of driving. Most of these drives will be broken up with interesting stops along the way.

As the water overflows, dazzling cream-coloured stalactites are formed that – from afar – resemble cotton or snow. The pools are filled with waters that many believe have healing properties for circulation and the digestive system. Close to Pamukkale are the ruins of Hierapolis, an important Roman bath centre founded by the King of Pergamon in 190 BC.
