Just over the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain, Tangier offers a captivating snapshot of life on the Maghreb coast.
While cities such as Marrakesh and Fes get the glory, Tangier offers a different snapshot of Morocco – one spiked with Spanish flavours and a crisp sea breeze. The city feels as European as it does African, located further north than its popular counterparts. Its history is an international one, and its cuisine has a multicultural flair that’s unrivalled in the region, with a little bit of Mediterranean, a touch of Arabic, and a dash of European. Just outside the city’s limits lie the wonders of the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, with Cap Spartel marking Africa’s most north-western point.

Highlights of Morocco

Wander through the Tangier Medina
You can forget the map as you walk the streets of Tangier’s medina – to really experience these streets, you’ll want to get lost wandering the labyrinth of sights and sounds. Despite being a popular attraction, the medina has managed to maintain an air of Moroccan authenticity, with locals still living and shopping in the area.

Explore the Caves of Hercules
According to legend, the caverns below Cap Spartel are the very same caves that Hercules slept in during his labours. Naturally formed but extended by human hands throughout history, you can look out from the great halls through the seaside opening, where a map of Africa outlines the Atlantic waters.

Taste the essential flavours of Tangier
The souqs of Morocco are awash with delectable street food, and Tangier is no exception. From essential snacks like bessara and khobz (fava bean soup with flatbread) to sardines and smoky eggplant fritters, a world of flavour is at your fingertips. The ubiquitous sweet mint tea is delicious and practically obligatory.

-
Travel to Cap Spartel where the iconic lighthouse marks the meeting point of the Strait of Gibraltar and the North Atlantic.
-
